CoolSys President and CEO Adam Coffey had the opportunity to chat with members of the CoolSys family of brands to discuss how their acquisition experience has been thus far.

Q: Why did you choose CoolSys to grow your brand?

A: It was getting to the point in my life where I was really going to have to make some choices about having to put money away for my family and my retirement. When CoolSys came around and made a very fair offer it just made sense. I could take care of my family and my personal retirement needs and not stifle the growth of the company.

A: We had a fast-growing business and we wanted to expand nationwide. We wanted a more diverse customer base and more coverage from an installation standpoint. CoolSys had that coverage. They have the industry presence.

Q: How did you see CoolSys make an impact on your business?

A: We started delivering resources that we didn’t have before. From trucks, IT solutions, benefits and so much more, if we made a change it was always for the better.

A: We have the benefit of greater purchasing power of better medical benefits, in-house counsel, in-house resources such as graphic design, and I can pick up the phone and reach out to leadership at any time.

Q: What would you tell business owners who are considering joining the CoolSys family of brands?

A: The reason [acquisition] works is because the CEO of CoolSys has developed a culture of “do no harm” to my business. Meaning, they ask for the numbers and expect me to hit them, but I still run the business as I normally would – only now I have access to greater support in many areas of the business.

A: CoolSys has been true to every single word they told us. In terms of negotiation, they were very fair. It was wonderful dealing with them. I’ve had the most incredible time. I run this business as its mine. They don’t dictate how or what we should do. CoolSys has allowed us to stay fiercely independent.

A: Ultimately, the acquisition has worked out very well. Give it a chance. The financial opportunities and the equity rollover piece are very attractive. It has surpassed our expectations.

Q: How has CoolSys helped your business perform Human Resource functions?

A: Working with CoolSys takes some of it off our plate. It’s a streamlined system on a national platform. Additionally, they helped me staff an open position, so that I was able to focus on running the business.

A: CoolSys offers an à la carte approach to benefits. For instance, we struggled with health insurance. CoolSys brought a health care plan which has been excellent.

Q: With the training facilities and robust programs offered by CoolSys, how have your technicians been impacted?

A: This trade is very complicated. To try to put a training program together yourself or to find the curriculum in a local college is very hard. CoolSys offers ongoing training specific to this industry. It helps my employees further their careers.

A: The acquisition has been very well received by our employees. With the benefit of training and education, they have benefitted from a personal, career-path point.

Q: What’s the benefit of connecting with other owners within the CoolSys family?

A: It’s a family. It’s nice to talk to different people around the country who do the same thing that we do. We can bounce ideas off each other.

A: It’s a great network of entrepreneurs. We don’t wait for a formal gathering. If I have an idea or question, I immediately jump on it and have the ability to call the right person.
