The Problem:

HVAC OPTIMIZATION SOLVES CONDENSATION ISSUES

A national retailer specializing in organic food, with over 400 stores across the U.S., faced a challenge with high humidity levels. This excess moisture led to condensation issues developing on refrigerated cases, resulting in water dripping onto the floors of many locations.

The retailer struggled to determine the best approach to resolving the CONDENSATION issues, as all parties involved in the store systems design and installation blamed one another.

Often, adding expensive dehumidification units was suggested as a solution. The retailer turned to SESCO for unbiased, efficient, and cost-effective expertise.

Project Objectives

  • Identify the root causes of condensation and propose corrective actions tailored to each store.

  • Enhance the kitchen hood design and rebalance the store’s airflow to address humidity issues.

  • Reducs store’s dew point to prevent water collection on floors without increasing HVAC tonnage

The Solution

SESCO offered a turnkey solution that included a detailed review of each store’s operation, the equipment in place, their maintenance history, and extensive air and humidity readings.

The SESCO team then identified the root causes and proposed corrective actions tailored to each store.

In certain cases, SESCO enhanced the kitchen hood design and rebalanced the store’s airflow to address humidity issues. As a result, the indoor dew point dropped from 63 degrees to 50 degrees, all without increasing HVAC tonnage.

In other instances, SESCO provided a comprehensive engineering solution that included a new air balance table to ensure positive pressure and the supply and installation of additional or replacement equipment. This was done as a turnkey solution that included us providing the equipment, any necessary structural work, electrical, plumbing, gas lines, and permits.

Additionally, some of the most effective solutions involved thorough HVAC commissioning and balancing, which often generated close to $30,000 in annual energy savings without adding any equipment.

The Impacts

SESCO Successfully completed 200 projects to resolve the persistent humidity issues faced by stores across 24 states. The retailer benefited from cost-effective, durable solutions that were implemented in record time, ultimately saving them millions of dollars over the years.
