CoolSys Comprehensive Energy Solutions Helps Data Center Save 100% on Energy Costs

The Situation

The rapid rise of AI and emerging technologies is accelerating demand for data centers, alongside the need for scalable, resilient energy infrastructure. These gigawatt-scale facilities require a robust design for redundancy and reliability to protect critical operations. As a result, the total cost of ownership of these systems is rising, making efficient, cost-effective energy strategies essential to minimize operational expenses. In addition, state and local governments are offering incentives, or charging energy tariffs, to reduce the strain on power grids.

The Opportunity

An RFP was published for a government Tier III Edge data center with key objectives:

1) Maximize both efficiency and resilience.

2) Minimize total cost of ownership, operating expenses, and carbon emissions. The facility planners also required an all-inclusive service plan. Significant energy export tariffs would be levied for every 100 kW drawn from the grid, further underscoring the need for an optimized energy strategy.

The Solution

CoolSys rose to the challenge, leveraging its deep expertise in regulations, incentives, multidisciplinary engineering capabilities, skilled design, technical expertise, an in-house monitoring center that is supported 24/7/365 to deliver a cost-effective and fully optimized solution.

The CoolSys Energy Solutions team aligned with all of the center’s strategic goals for facility performance, energy, and cost savings, as well as lower carbon emissions for long-term success. The CoolSys 360 solution included a site assessment, Combined Heat and Power (CHP) system design, installation, maintenance, and seamless integration with architectural plans to ensure long-term success and the lowest cost of ownership.

To boost resilience and redundancy while avoiding steep energy tariffs, CoolSys integrated the cogeneration system with a solar array. To provide full protection of the critical infrastructure and ensure 100% redundancy, the entire system was also integrated into the power grid. Once commissioned, CoolSys began 24/7/365 monitoring and regular maintenance to provide a full turnkey solution.

DIAGNOSTICS & ISSUE RESOLUTION

CoolSys Cogeneration Engineers conducted a detailed design and engineering assessment, identifying efficiency opportunities to achieve optimal grid reliance and eliminate 100% of energy costs.

OPTIMAL COMMISSIONING & PLANT BALANCING

The units were calibrated to work in perfect harmony with the solar array while maintaining cold aisle containment and other critical systems, ensuring seamless operation and maximum energy efficiency.

PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE IMPLEMENTATION

CoolSys introduced a comprehensive preventive maintenance program covering all system components. This included regular inspections, calibration, and predictive replacements to prevent outages and maintain availability.

24/7/365 MONITORING & REAL-TIME RESPONSE

A central pillar of the proposal was the implementation of a turnkey solution. CoolSys also provided a service package that included constant system monitoring to detect and resolve issues before they occurred.

The Results

The CoolSys custom design and integration yielded optimum grid reliance, 100% energy savings, and 100% redundancy. The success of the program has led to a seven-year extension of the service agreement and two additional facility design requests encompassing over 80+ engines utility service.

OPTIMAL COMMISSIONING & PLANT BALANCING

The CHP system now operates impressively, delivering resilient, efficient power to the data center consistently and reliably.

IMPROVED ENERGY EFFICIENCY & COST SAVINGS

Utilizing a self-powered energy system, the data center was able to avoid tariffs, secure incentives and ultimately realize 100% energy cost savings with the CHP system.

ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT

By integrating into the solar array, CoolSys secured a reduction of 48% CO2MTE, meeting requirements and reinforcing its commitment to environmental sustainability.

ELEVATED RESILIENCE

The CHP system ensured that during power outages or emergencies, this data center could maintain uninterrupted operations — over 100% availability.

Expansion of Partnership

Recognizing the value and reliability delivered, the organization extended CoolSys’ maintenance and monitoring services for an additional seven (7) years, and is working with Coolsys to add a similar solution to two additional facilities. This expansion further underlined CoolSys’ position as a trusted partner in ensuring operational excellence.
