HVAC-R Technical Careers are on the Rise
If you’ve landed a career as a technician in the refrigeration and HVAC industry, you’re in the right place. That’s because employment of heating, air conditioning and refrigeration mechanics and installers is projected to grow 13 percent from 2018 to 2028, according to the U.S. Department of Labor¹. This projected growth exceeds the average for all occupations, thanks in part to the growing interest in energy efficiency.
Even if you’re just at the point where you’re considering a HVAC-R technical career, you’re headed in the right direction. We’re eager to fill you in on how you can progress your career as an HVAC-R technician. Whether you’re most interested in installation, repair or replacement of HVAC-R equipment, there are various skills, job types and locations where you can apply your abilities, depending in part on your level of experience and training under your belt.
CoolSys offers formal training opportunities at every level of your professional career development and in each of our core trades: HVAC, refrigeration, fabrication, energy optimization, electrical, plumbing and hot water hydro scrubbing. We also offer the invaluable mentorship of our senior-level technical leaders who are always available to communicate with our entry-level technicians.
Climbing the Technical Ladder
Entry-level technician
If you have less than 2 years’ experience under your belt, you might start out by assisting more experienced technicians with installation and service jobs. This could include equipment checks and troubleshooting.
Professional-level technician
By adding just one more year of experience, you’re likely ready to take on more on-the-job responsibilities. As a HVAC-R service technician with three years’ experience, you’ve cultivated the skills to take complete diagnostics, maintenance and repair responsibilities.
Mid-level technician
Once you reach the managerial and director level, you’ll probably have around eight years of training and experience on your resume, and you’ll be acting in a system designer and engineer capacity.
Senior-level technician
As a senior level technician, you may be running or even owning your own successful refrigeration and HVAC business. At this point, who knows—we may be talking to you about becoming a CoolSys company!
