It’s Past Time to Consider Refrigerant Conversion

Refrigerant is vital to any HVAC system functioning properly. With the EPA phase-out of R-22 coming to completion in 2020, Freon refrigerant will no longer permitted in new commercial applications. Now is the time to determine a plan when it comes to installing a new AC system or converting your current system with an R-22 retrofit.

CoolSys urges customers to use the phase-out as an opportunity to take advantage of a planned upgrade or conversion. By doing so, customers can implement a strategy to achieve a more cost- and energy-efficient system that will also fulfill the phase-out objectives of being more environmentally conscious.

Weighing the factors

There are many factors to consider when making the decision on whether to upgrade your entire AC system or to convert it to use an alternative, more natural refrigerant. Each facility or owner/operator must prioritize which factors are most important, for instance the capital investment, total cost of ownership, environmental concerns, and equipment lifespan of a new or retrofitted system.

For customers who may not be ready to invest in brand new HVAC equipment, retrofitting with an alternative, natural refrigerant may be a timely and ideal decision. Either approach should involve consulting with an HVAC professional to ensure that upgrade or conversion decisions will allow for the AC system to continue to operate at optimum performance while meeting current regulatory standards.

When deciding to use an alternative refrigerant, even more decisions lie ahead. Determining which refrigerant may work best for your specific AC unit and applications can be challenging. Working with the experts at CoolSys gives you the confidence and surety of knowing that our experts have the resources and knowledge to guide you through the entire process—from engineering and design through installation and energy optimization.

Both new systems, as well as conversion plans, require professional, technical expertise to ensure that the new unit or refrigerant will function with all currently utilized HVAC components and parts. CoolSys has extensive experience with designing and installing new construction projects, as well as retrofits that utilize natural refrigerants.
