Making a TRUCE with Bad Driving Habits

Ensuring our employees return home safely to their families every night is a top priority for CoolSys. Most of you are aware of the dangers of using your mobile devices while driving, and CoolSys has an existing mobile devices usage policy. However, we feel we can do more to protect our employees.

Did you know that 40% of all motor vehicle accidents involve a commercial vehicle? Distraction from mobile devices is one of the leading causes of those accidents. Even with the most thoughtful policies and best intentions in place, we realize that it’s sometimes hard to resist interacting with your phone. We also know that our own work habits may even contribute to the problem.

For that reason, we are implementing a new system called TRUCE to help improve driver safety by eliminating the risk of mobile device distraction when you’re driving a corporate vehicle. You can think of TRUCE as an automatic safety switch for your phone that turns on as soon as your work vehicle starts moving and turns off as soon as you are safely parked.

Our safety team will work with TRUCE to enable you to use features like hands-free phone calling, navigation, music and other third-party or custom apps you may need while you’re driving. In addition, after you finish each drive, the TRUCE app will provide immediate feedback to you about your driving performance, such as speeding, harsh braking, acceleration, etc.

It is important to know that TRUCE values your privacy and does not:

  • Collect or store personal information, including credit card numbers, passwords or photos.
  • Access, listen to, read or record any call details, texting information, emails or photos.
  • Track or report your location.
  • Access data from any other apps on your device, including web browsing activity.
  • Monitor the apps you use or your activities within those apps.

TRUCE is not designed to monitor or police your activity. It is there only to automatically block the unnecessary distractions caused by your mobile device while driving. We will introduce TRUCE with a CoolSys pilot group at the beginning of 2021 then gradually roll it out across the company from the end of Quarter 1 through Quarter 2.

Safety is paramount at work, at home and on the road. We want to ensure that you arrive safely at the end of each and every trip — especially the final trip of the day that brings you home.
