Take Stress Off Your List This Holiday Season
While the holidays are meant to be a time of celebration, there are also moments when they can be very stressful. Keep the tips below handy to help whenever you’re feeling stressed, upset or depressed.
Keep Your Regular Routine
A change in routine can lead to additional stress. Try not to overextend yourself, go to sleep and get up at the usual time and stick to as normal a diet as you can.
Think Moderation
It is easy to drink and eat too much at parties and special dinners, so stay aware and try not to overindulge in food or alcohol.
Be Realistic
Many of us have an idealized version of what the holidays should be like, and we can become disappointed when they don’t live up to those expectations. Take a realistic view of what you can accomplish and focus on enjoying those things — not worrying over what you didn’t do.
Stay Connected
Make time to spend with friends and/or family who value you. If they don’t live close by, call them for a “reality check” or some “grounding.” It’s OK to ask them for support when you need it.
Don’t Go It Alone
We often attempt to take on too much or do too much on our own during the holidays. Don’t hesitate to ask family and friends for help with decorating, shopping, cooking — or just providing a shoulder to lean on.
Speak With a Professional
If you’ve tried these tips and still find yourself extremely stressed or depressed, it’s probably time to speak with a professional. The Employee Assistance Program (EAP) provides confidential consulting services if you want to discuss personal and/or work-related issues and concerns. Call 800-538-3543 or go online for more.
