Cogeneration Solutions for Critical Facilities

The Vineland Veterans Memorial Home in New Jersey is a large-scale facility dedicated to providing long-term care for military veterans, their spouses, and Gold Star Parents. In response to rising energy costs, increasing grid outages, and expanding state incentives for energy efficiency, facility managers began exploring innovative infrastructure solutions.

Their goal: to enhance energy resilience, reduce operational expenses, and align with evolving sustainability standards while continuing to deliver reliable care to their vulnerable residents.

The Problem

To support the facility’s energy efficiency and resiliency goals, a 555 [kW] combined heat and power (CHP) gas prime mover and a 125-ton absorption chiller were installed.

However, to fully realize the intended performance and operational benefits, the system required further integration, re-commissioning, and optimization. These enhancements were essential to align the system’s output with the facility’s long-term energy and sustainability objectives.

CoGeneration Solutions

To address the facility’s complex energy challenges, safety needs and quality care for residents, CoolSys, as a NJDPMC Classified Contractor, deployed its expert CCHP team to implement a comprehensive strategy focused on system assessment, retrofitting, re-commissioning, and optimization.

This multifaceted approach ensured that the installed equipment could operate at peak performance and align with the facility’s energy, resiliency, safety and sustainability goals. To further enhance financial outcomes, CoolSys supported the facility in securing state incentives.

Today, CoolSys continues to provide 24/7/365 monitoring and proactive maintenance, ensuring sustained operational efficiency, minimizing outages, and preventing performance degradation.

Key Actions

Diagnostics & Issue Resolution

CoolSys CoGen specialists performed a comprehensive technical evaluation of the facility’s energy systems, pinpointing key areas for performance enhancement. Through the integration of critical system components, all identified issues were resolved. The installation of a control service module, then optimized to ensure long-term operational efficiency and reliability.

Optimal Commissioning & Plant Balancing

The CHP unit, absorption chiller and control center were calibrated to operate in optimum balance with other critical systems, ensuring seamless operations and maximum energy efficiency.

Preventive Maintenance Implementation

CoolSys introduced a comprehensive preventive maintenance program covering all system components. This included regular inspections, calibration, and predictive replacements to prevent future failures.

24/7/365 Monitoring & Real-Time Response

A central pillar of the solution was the implementation of constant system monitoring to detect and resolve issues as they occurred.

Incentive And Compliance Support

The CoolSys team actively monitors local, state, and federal programs to stay ahead of evolving energy resilience incentives and safety regulations.

The Results

The results of CoolSys CoGen’s intervention were transformational for the client organization. By addressing both the immediate and long-term inefficiencies, the center experienced measurable improvements across key performance indicators.

The CHP unit was successfully commissioned, integrating seamlessly with the centralized control system and absorption chiller, which is powered by free waste heat.

This upgrade enabled CoolSys to secure $1.16 million in incentives for the Vineland Veterans Memorial Home from the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities Clean Energy Programs for Commercial and Industrial Energy Efficiency.
