Accelerating Sustainability and Shopper Satisfaction Across Dozens of Regional Banners
A multinational food retailer managing more than 20 regional banners and diverse store formats sought solutions to reduce energy consumption and enhance the shopping experience more rapidly than their store remodeling schedule allowed.
The retailer partnered with CoolSys Energy Solutions to create a comprehensive lighting retrofit program to be implemented across 121 stores across 6 states in 6 months.
The CoolSys Energy Solutions team expertly handled every facet of the retrofit project, including coordinating the efforts of 4 to 8 crews simultaneously. By aligning the retrofit schedule with the customer’s corporate and store operations, CoolSys ensured there was no disruption to business operations.
Installed overnight while the stores were closed, the crews replaced the outdated T8 and T5 fluorescent lamps with state-of-the-art LED linear and troffer fixtures.
Designed for speed, cost savings and sustainability, the program delivered measurable results across all stores, as well as enhanced store aesthetics and elevated the shopping experience ahead of the busy end-of-year season.
Between May and October, all 121 stores underwent retrofitting, averaging just 5-7 days per store—roughly three times faster than the previous contractors.
The retrofit resulted in significant annual savings of over $5.5 million in operating costs and a reduction of 26,388 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions.
Leveraging CoolSys’ in-house engineering experts and network of pre-approved lighting distributors, manufacturers, and suppliers, the team ensured timely equipment delivery. Additionally, CoolSys worked with their recyclers to recover used materials and coordinate with city inspectors to secure required permits.
The customer was highly impressed by the quality and efficiency of CoolSys’ work, prompting them to seek the team’s recommendations for completing the LED upgrades of other banners and for a relight program for stores that were retrofitted nearly a decade ago.
