A multinational food retailer managing more than 20 regional banners and diverse store formats sought solutions to reduce energy consumption and enhance the shopping experience more rapidly than their store remodeling schedule allowed.

The retailer partnered with CoolSys Energy Solutions to create a comprehensive lighting retrofit program to be implemented across 121 stores across 6 states in 6 months.
The solution involved replacing the outdated T8 and T5 fluorescent lamps with state-of-the-art LED linear and troffer fixtures, installed overnight while the stores were closed, ensuring there was no disruption to business operations.
The CoolSys Energy Solutions team expertly handled every facet of the retrofit project. They coordinated the efforts of 4 to 8 crews simultaneously, aligning the retrofit schedule with the customer’s corporate and store operations. In addition to using its in-house engineering group, the team leveraged its network of pre-approved lighting distributors, manufacturers, and equipment suppliers to ensure the timely delivery of all necessary equipment.
Additionally, they worked with their network of recyclers to recover used materials and coordinated with city inspectors to secure all required permits.
Between May and October, all 121 stores underwent retrofitting, averaging just 5-7 days per store—roughly three times faster than the previous contractors.
This program not only enhanced the stores’ aesthetics and improved the shopping experience ahead of the busy end-of-year season but also resulted in significant annual savings of over $5.5 million in operating costs and a reduction of 26,388 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions.
The customer was highly impressed by the quality and efficiency of CoolSys Energy’s work, prompting them to seek the team’s recommendations for completing the LED upgrades of other banners and for a relight program for stores that were retrofitted nearly a decade ago.
