Retrofitting Energy-Efficient LED Lighting for the 99 Cents Only Discount Retailer

99 Cents Only Stores, a popular deep-discount retailer headquartered in California, sought an environmentally responsible solution to reduce energy and maintenance expenditures across the four states where it operates — California, Arizona, Nevada and Texas.

Subsequently, CoolSys Energy Solutions was selected for an ambitious project to retrofit the existing fluorescent lighting in 247 of the company’s locations with energy-efficient LED lighting; in this case, taking just 100 days to complete the project.

The Goal

Reduce energy and maintenance expenditures across four states with an energy-efficient LED lighting retrofit.

The Assignment

End‑to‑End Project Management

The CoolSys Energy Solutions team was tasked with complete turnkey management and execution of the project, including scoping, surveying, product supply, installation, quality assurance, and at the same time also handled the application for and collection of utility incentives.

CoolSys Energy Solutions utilized its network of preferred suppliers to procure the project’s four-foot linear TLED and LED emergency backup driver kits.

Around‑the‑Clock Installation

During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, up to 10 CoolSys Energy Solutions installation crews worked day and night, weekdays and weekends, moving from location to location as efficiently as possible to complete the project. CoolSys Energy Solutions leveraged its suppliers’ well-stocked inventory and also utilized their nationwide network of distribution centers to keep the teams supplied within a very tight timeline to complete the LED lighting retrofit.

Project Objective

Upgrade 247 stores in 100 days with energy-efficient LED Lighting.

The Results

“Project Bright,” as it was dubbed by the 99 Cents Only team, stands out as one of the most quickly executed projects of its size in the industry, beating the planned deadline for completion while staying within the project’s overall budget.

The successful completion of the project improves earnings for 99 Cents Only Stores with a projected payback in 14.5 months.

Positive Environmental Impact of LED Lighting Retrofit

“Project Bright” reduced annual energy consumption by 60 million kWh/year. The environmental impact of this project is equivalent to removing:

41,466 metric tons of carbon dioxide from the air

8,958 vehicles’ greenhouse gas emissions

The amount of carbon sequestered by 54,153 acres of US forests
